No. It works sometimes, and for some periods of time. Some communes in Hawai'i have been going on since the 1960's. People come, people go.

I know of an instance in New York some years ago, where a group of homeless people lived together in an abandoned building harmoniously for quite a while.
In Tucson, there were a group of people living in tents in a certain area (possible they are still there - not sure).
It works in boarding schools, camps, etc. though not always ideally.

What do you mean by communal living?
If you mean Big Brother, that's designed exactly not to work. But I have lived quite happily with others for 3/4 years.
So I guess it hasn't been proved.

There are many large families living under the one roof, some might say not in harmony though lol, the two things that would be important to me are space and organisation.

I have tried communal living while working just to save some money, but it does not work. The roster system and your personal standards can clash with those with whom you are living with.We are all uniquely made and have our own unique desires and lifestyles.Tried tolerance, kindness, sometimes compromise, but htis did not last.sabitha

I don't think it'd been proven that it doesn't work--I think people just don't like the idea
