Have been working as a nanny for 20 years and am bored stupid! Really frustrated with applying for other jobs only to have people take one look at my cv,pat me on the head and say "oh,how cute"!. I have a brain,am well travelled, good with people and a fast learner. On the downside,I have no pc skills (just signed up for a course) and am rubbish with numbers. Would love to work in an environment that involves people, challenges me and would give me the chance to travel or ideally work overseas. Any advice appreciated.

Hey babes - ok well going on your lack of office experience, and your love of working overseas etc - why not try for a holiday rep - you'll meet loads of people and wont be tied to a desk job!!!
just a suggestion - but you sound perfect for the job to me!

If you've been working in one persons house as a nanny rather than a nursery / playgroup, I think your first step has to be day care elsewhere. As a nanny in a house you've been more like a stay at home mum & so less employable. I think if you could get a job at a nursery & take on as much responsiblity as you can over the course of a year say that'd be your first step.

If you've already been working in a nursery then maybe you're aiming at jobs that are not related enough to what you've been doing. How about teaching foreign children english as a step away from just looking after children & a step abroad. Many of my friends have done this to get around.

Once you've made a 'jump' to a different work environment like this it should be easier to look at other jobs.
a) abroad in particular you have an excellent opportunity to become multilingual if you get very involved & therefore can go to translating / tourist / hotel / senior school teacher / secretary / PR kind of options

or b) Staying in the same business moving up in the same school / holiday centre to a managerial position & then looking for managerial posts in other places playing on the organisation side of things to get different jobs.

Definitely getting better with the PC will be a big help as just browsing the internet for options allows you to look at so many more opportunities.

Good luck!

ps maybe www.prospects.ac.uk would help you, not sure!

Have you considered a career as a flight attendant? Many of the skills you had as a nanny are transferable and would likely be useful for a job as a flight attendant. There are probably other procedures you need to learn, but it doesn't hurt to research this occupation ... plus, you get to travel as part of your job!

well i would suggest being a traveling nurse.. they pay you very well and you get to meet people all over the world...first you have to try to get into a nursing program and the rest is history... i made it sound simple but the actual process can be a pain... good luck!!

Perhaps you could teach some kind of subject that requires only a certification (or not even that) instead of a college degree, such as yoga, piano, photoshop, etc.
