This should not be allowed, but I saw it on a news cast about a sherrif making about 300,000 + a year. + he was supposed to get another 50,000. The extra money people get doesn't make sense to me. Seems like that money could go to help others. (It was rumored he turned down the 50,000 due to public complaints, but if there were no complaints he would have taken it!

300K for a sheriff is a tad extreme. One would wonder what politicians he has 8 x 10 glossies of. On the other hand, if you are comparing him to dubya, he is probably underpaid

Clearly you do not work in law enforcement. These people work extremely hard for YOU - the citizen. The Sheriff in question is the Sheriff of Marion County (which is where Indianapolis is located).

In Indiana, the Sheriff's Department is in charge of collecting unpaid property taxes. A portion of those taxes that are collected go the the Sheriff himself. That has been a law in Indiana for a long time. He did NOTHING illegal in making that money or taking the pay raise (which he decided to give back). I don't think he should have given it back personally. It was his money and he did nothing wrong. If people were not aware that the Sheriffs in Indiana were paid this way, it is their fault for being uninformed citizens. This is not anything new.

Now, I believe that it is a great idea to give a portion of the taxes collected to the Sheriff's Department since it is their job to go collect them. However, it would seem more fair to me if that tax money went to the Department to spend on equipment, etc. Or if the money was divided up as a bonus among all the deputies at the end of the year because it isn't the sheriff himself who is collecting these taxes - it is the deputies. I think they should get something out of it as well.

Actually the salary of the President pales in comparison to the income a former President will make. The Book alone is worth working the 4-8 years for free. As long as the country is still around when your leave!

I wonder what that sherriff will have to write about when he's out?
