This means that "my dad was a brave man to go even somewhat close to one..." I don't know what it was he was brave enough to get close to, but there was something that was frightening or dangerous, and the father was willing to stand a little closer than six feet (2 meters) away from it.

Number 1 on our local Chinese Restaurant Menu is a very smelly dish called 'old fish'. Not many people can stand the smell of it. You would have to be very brave not only to eat it, but to stand close to it. So your dad was indeed a brave man to stand within six feet of 'One'. Simple................

"One" is a being used as a pronoun, it is replacing a noun that must have been described in an earlier sentence. For example, if a prior sentence said, "The snakes were poisonous." then the "one" refers to the snake, and the sentence could have been written as: "My dad was a brave man just to stand within six feet of that snake."

"within six feet of one" doesn't mean height it means distance.

Your father would not stand any closer to "one" than six feet.

As for what "one" is would depend on what your father was talking about.
