Why is London called "the greatest city in the world"?

There are great cities and there are great cities. The scenic of Venice, the panoramic view of Mallorca and the tall buildings of Chicago. London is usually refered to as the greates city of them all. Why?

I wasn't aware of any specific classification. I have been in a number of cities that claim to be the 'best' or 'greatest'.

To be frank it depends on what you want from a city and whether it is the best is in the eye of the beholder.

Insecurity. Cities that make that claim and for that matter people, products, companies, etc. Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus... "The Greatest Show on Earth". Advertising and Marketing people do these things. Making that claim is a form of intimidation and or suggestive selling- trying to force a belief on the unwitting saps.
Similar to stating before your question... Posed by the greatest questioner of all time..... Why..do .. fish.. swim ..in .. water ..?

Who calls it that? The English? Never heard that one. Heard of the city of lights (paris), eternal city (rome), city that never sleeps (new york), many others, but not of the greatest city in the world ever.
