When I turn it on it shows the main Compaq screen, and then goes to a black screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left hand corner. I press Ctrl Alt Delete and it resets, goes to the Compaq screen, and then back to the black screen with the cursor. I do that several times before finnaly my computer will start. I recently must have gotten a new virus becuase i've been having new pop ups. Any idea what this is, or how to get rid of it? Thanks.

if you can get the main operating system to come up.....i assume you have virus software....run a complete scan....if you don't purchase it...(norton internet security is quite good)....also download from "www.download.com".....adaware and spybot search and destroy....run both of these to get rid of all spyware and adware.....if you can't boot your system....you have no choice but to format the disk and reload all your system software from scratch..(A clean installation) provided you have the original CD's....good luck....Rob

I have a compaq that used to have that problem personally I'd like to just take my compaq outside and beat with a bat like on office space. But anyway what I found to be on my compaq presario was a bad driver configuration if you go to the compaq site www.compaq.com and go to troubleshooting and there should be a some info to help you plus driver downloads you will also need to know the product number which should be on the side of the computer if you own a desktop.

If that doesn't work compaqs have a restore program which can bring the computer back to the way it was when you first got it. (BEWARE! Back up everything before you do so). If you do that I suggest that you remove some of that usless compaq software that came with the computer it tends to eat up a lot of processing power. and frees up some space on the HD.

You are probably going to need to get someone to look at it, but there are two possible ways to get in and see what is happening.

(1) As soon as the compaq screen comes up, start hitting F8. This will allow you to get into either safe or command prompt mode.

(2) If you bothered making an emergency disk, boot from it.

Since it actually does boot eventually, you would have to see what processes are running to know what you might have picked up. That would be task manager.

Pop-ups sound like spyware, but they usually do not keep you from booting. It would defeat the purpose. They want to track you, not stop you from using the computer.

You appear to have something else going on.

Can't tell you more than that from the information you gave.

Generally it's rare for a virus that has wiped out your boot sector to still allow you to boot after a few ctrl+alt+deletes.

But for those rare occasions your computer does boot up, try going here:

It's a very comprehensive online virus scanner.
