You realize when you apply for a job using a "cool" email address like "LilThug69@xxx.com or you have a 3-minute 50 Cent song as your voicemail that you're pretty much destroying any type of first impression you can make.

Also, wearing your best pair of blue jeans accompanied by a $200 pair of sneakers, isn't going to impress anyone during a job interview. This isn't American Idol, it's reality.

There's nothing wrong with being the hip-hop pimp you think you are during your days off; but it's time to grow up just a wee bit and realize the world isn't one big rap video.

Otherwise, McDonald's will always be hiring.

And if you're over the age of 23 and this question applies to you...then you're probably not fit to be a parent.

Here's some more tips.
~Comb your hair.
~Shower beforehand.
~Remove any facial piercings.
~Cover any tattoos unless you're applying at a tattoo parlor.
~Don't wear a hat.
~Have clean hands and fingernails.
~Brush teeth.
~Shake their hand in a firm handshake, but not firm enough to hurt their hand. I always hated it when a potential new hire had a wimpy handshake.
~When someone asks why you want to work there don't shrug or say "because I need a job" What the interviewer wants to know is why you want to work THERE.
~Don't make the interviewer pry information out of you. Be active in your interviewing process. If you just sit there and give yes or no answers I wouldn't want to hire you.
~Fill out your application fully and spell everything correctly. We've had a laugh about some applications that said really stupid things.
~If you've never had a conviction for a crime don't put down that "I've been arrested 6 times" if you're trying to get a job.

wow, a little angry aren't we. People have the right to dress however they want, it's called freedom. I do understand what you're saying about how to show up for an interview...you should always look professional (it also depends on what type of job it is.) As for the shoes, what do you care how much someone pays for their shoes!? The first impression should be on the person, not what type of music he/she likes...that's rediculous! I hope you don't hire people, because you will be missing out on a lot of good workers because you're so judgemental!!!!

I agree with you! I love seeing people in line for a job wearing their "thug" stuff. Or a girl wearing a mini mini skirt. I know I won't have to beat them out for that job! Seriously, wear something nice and be prepared for an interview on the spot. And remember, the people who might hire you might become your friends down the line, but putting your email (toohotforyou@whatever.com) is like signing your name! Be respectable and realize it is a job not a hobby.

Just a little more ...

If you have straightened your appearance, voice mail and email up to finally land a job, employers expect you to --

show up on time

be dressed appropriately

have some people skills so you don't terrify the mass public

be able to read, write and do math above a 4th grade level -- you got the high school diploma WHERE????

You do have good points here.

I would suggest people assume employers are more conservative and would lean on the side of caution. Use one email address for job search that is not "controversial" like beerman@hotmail.com or hotdude@yahoo.com. Use email like john.jones@gmail.com or jjones@hotmail.com.

Also, when you drop off resumes, dress appropriately. There is always somebody watching, or assume there is.

Why do you care? Seriously, I wanna know. I don't disagree, it's just that some people don't have common sense. I don't understand how it applies to you if you're not having the problem, though.

Another nice start would be to edit your application for spelling and grammar. The amount of bad spelling on this site is appalling!!
