What make and model of car is advisable to start with? Cost is a concern, but I want to be a bit competitive. Any advice on how to get started would be appreciated

I drive in my local tracks pure stock division and I can tell you first hand it is generally cheaper to run that class than mini stocks. I have nothing against that class but I feel you get more race car for the money when you compare the two . but if you insist on running mini stock then the car of choice around here is the old late 70's mid 80's mustang . you can go to www.ospracing.net or www.swainsbororaceway.com to look at some of the winning cars there . either way you can look to spend anywhere between 2500 and 5000 depending on how competitive you want to be at first . and the later in the season at your local track the better it is to try to buy a "turn key" car

If you want to start out in a mini-stock division, the best car for that class is a ford pinto.> I know, lame.. But trust me, half of the cars have pinto frames under them. They are the best handling cars you will find. You can usually find them in junkyards pretty cheap too.
Unless you really know what you're doing, get someone else to freshen up the engine. There are alot of little things that most people don't think of in 4 cyl motors. Find someone who already owns a mini-stock car, and ask them who the person to talk to is..

Another option would be to drive for someone. Most car owners that don't race themselves anymore will keep up a car for you for a price. All you gotta do is get a few sponsors, and you're set.

Why don't you head down into the pits at your favorite track and ask some questions. Most love to talk about the sport.
