Probably, many stores do it. You can always refuse to let them look or chose not to shop there.

The law says they can use self-help to prevent you from committing the crime of shop lifting. So in short yes they can stop you.

However, that said, you can refuse a search. Then they must call the police while they detain you.

Then it really gets interesting. If the police find cause to arrest you, they arrest you for shoplifting, however, if the police find nothing then you sue the store for false imprisonment, etc....

yes it is legal. If they have probably cause to think that you have something in the bag that you are not supposed to have.
