don't you all find it comical how everyone has counted the braves out at the HALFWAY point? what a joke. hey here's one for all the naysayers; who has won 9 of 12? that's right mets fans! andruw, chipper, francoeur, even laroache are all red hot right now. the pitching is still hot and cold, but maybe we'll pick up a good veteran starter for the stretch. hey mets fans, remember the 93 dodgers? they had a 13 1/2 game lead at the break and wound up crying at home during the postseason, just like you guys will be!!

I agree.
Just watch the second half. John Smoltz heated up right before the Break and shows no signs of slowing down (hes pitching today). I sure hope their bullpen gets it together with whoever they use (Ray or Sosa or whoever) and then they will be successful. Their hitting is also getting better and they have a top 5 manager in the game today (with Leyland, La Russa, Francona, and Guillen).

I've been a Braves fan for years, but I just don't see them winning it all this year. The pitching really sucks. Remember when the Braves had the best pitching the majors? That's not the case anymore. The bullpen blows up more often than the Middle East and Tim Hudson is beginning to look more like a high school pitcher than a seasoned veteran. If he lasts beyond the 3d inning, he's had a great game!! I'm not giving up hope, but I am being realistic in my expectations for the season.

They are not to be counted out yet. Not with the bats heating up and Smoltz pitching the way he has lately. If only there was a way to redo June games!!!!!
I think that if they could get some help from their bullpen, they would stand a good chance of even winning another division title. I remember a season back in the 80's when they were 15 games in last place. They came back to win the division that year. They were in the western division back then. The Braves came alive after the allstar and stayed hot the rest of the year. I know they had Terry Pendleton, Ron Gant, and Lonnie Smith back then too.
So anything is possible.

Yeah man! I'm a die-hard Braves fan since 1966 and I believe in them. Chipper is finally coming around and playing great along with the rest of the lineup. Hitting wise, I think the Braves are ok. Hudson needs to get it back together and get back on track. Smoltz has been pitching like the Smoltz of old lately. My biggest area of concern is the bullpen. If this improves, watch out! If the Braves just keep chipping away like they have been playing recently, they can do it. LET'S GO BRAVES!!!!

You are right on the money! The Braves always are able to make the best of a bad situation. The season's only half over. That's a lot of time to make up some ground. They still have a very solid team and I'm sure this season will turn around. What a game last night! They gave up the lead a couple of times, but battled through it for the win. That's my team! Go Braves!

Yes, I agree. The Braves are going to surge in this second half. The batting is very hot now and the pitching, although disapppointing up until now, has been showing signs of improvement: Sosa is a relief pitcher; John Smoltz is at a peak and will (barring any injury); and Tim Hudson has to get better (not allow so many runs early, which disheartens any team).

Brian McCann, who has been able to hold his high average, seems to be ready to compete for the highest average in the NL. (This was the reason for my questioin about how a batter qualifies -- in terms of at-bats -- for the batting crown.

Go, Braves!

i dont know about us catching the mets, that may be a stretch, but the wild card looks like a definite possibility at this point. no team in the NL really looks like they want to win the wild card, can cincy stay on top? will the astros get back to their form of last season? you cant really tell right now. as long as the braves have bobby cox and john scheurholtz, i am not counting them out

I'm a Braves fan and I wouldn't say it's comical how some people have counted them out already. To me it's very short-sighted as there's about half of the season to go.

It's too bad we can't erase June. If not for that, we'd be in the lead right now. We still have several games against the Mets. Ones that are going to prove to be critical. Last night was the difference between them now and last month... we're going all the way baby!

Yupp. it seems like alot of the players are heating up, for example Gilly,Laroache,Frenchy,Smoltz just to name a few. And for the players who aren't,they just had the all-star break to re-coup. And as they say,as long as your not mathematically out, your still alive.there are still alot of games to play,so of course i totally believe the braves can and WILL make a serious serge.go braves!
