When you are dealing with something like the Football World Cup, there is a lot of passion, money and national pride at stake.

In this kind of setting, an incident like Zidane's headbutting of Materazzi is going to raise a lot of questions and speculations on both sides of the argument.

It is clear from Zidane's performance in the match thus far, that he was a significant loss to his team in the closing minutes of extra time, and particularly when the game went to penalties (at which Zidane excels, and due to which France lost the game).

The consensus, even from third-party critics, seems to be that France were the stronger side in the Final, and that the Zidane incident lost them the game.

Materazzi will have been aware that Zidane is somewhat hot headed. He may, or may not, have known that Zidane's mother was diagnosed as terminally ill shortly before the match. Although he initially denied antagonising Zidane, he has since admitted it, although he continues to deny that the insult was about Zidane's mother or his ethnic roots.

It is possible that Materazzi was deliberately as antagonistic as possible in the hope that the French captain's reaction would earn Italy a penalty, or see Zidane sent off.

If that were the case, then that would mean that the World Cup Final may have been won as a result of 'gamesmanship', underhand tactics, rather than good football - and nobody, least of all the French, would want that to have been the case.

The possibility that Materazzi deliberately provoked Zidane's attack seems realistic and serious enough to warrant FIFA, the sport's governing body, to set up an investigation into it.

Meanwhile, the French as a nation seem to be happy that they achieved second place in the World Cup - in itself no mean feat - and to have forgiven Zidane.

The French are complaining not so much about losing, but instead more about Zidane's ruined reputation. He's been a French hero and an international star and now because of something Materazzi might have said he's had to end his career in such a disgraceful and embarassing manner. So of course they're upset -- some Italian player has just single-handedly taken down their national hero and gotten away with it, how would you feel if you were in their position??
And some fans would argue that the team was demoralized after Zidane was sent off, leading to a goalless last 10 minutes and the unfortunate penalty shot by Trezeguet. I think that's really stretching it, but with Henry and Ribery taken off Zidane was their best chance to score, so his sendoff put them at a huge disadvantage.

But we all know that Italy deserved to win because the French goal was a penalty, and a second shot by Toni was deemed offside when it really wasn't, so you can say that it all worked out well in the end.

even though zidane played really well this world cup, i doubt that in the last few minutes, he could have given france the win. its possible, but keep in mind that the only score france got was that penalty kick. if they were so much better than italy, they would have been able to score an actual goal when zidane was on the field.

and even if zidane had been around for the penalty kicks, italy still would have won...zidane would have made his kick but it would have been 4-5 either way.

i think italy played better and deserved to win. the problem with people these days is that if their team doesnt win, they think everyone else cheated.

See..... Red cards, referee's mistakes & and wrong actions made by players are a big part of football!Everyone who loses should accept what happened. bringing excuses are the thing that weak people do. It's not write to blame sd like Trezeguet or Zidane. they did their game. I was Italy supprter in that match, but the thing that materazzi said really persuade me that if I was in Zidan's place, I would have done sth to show my anger. But not too harsh like that. Any way that game is finished, and we should stop ourselves to blame anyone. Don't worry. there are more important things in this world to think about. Thank you!

Really, the facts are there in front of us.

Zidane's sending off reduced their ability to win the game in extra time and also hampered the French penalty taking options.

It gave the Italians the advantage and they duly won. Simple.

The head-butt didn't win Zidane any friends either.

Did she prefer to stay which include her father? Is that a danger now? keep in mind that sex with a step-father isn't incest yet what you probably did became adultery. have you ever apologized on your daughter and tried to make for some the wear and tear and tear you brought about to her existence, or are you in basic terms centred on your self? you should have time-honored that your husband, like you, has no moral backbone because he became keen to have sex with yet another guy's spouse. Confront your guilt, admit your mistakes on your daughter and then seek for her forgiveness.

It is true,,,,,what the other member of the team are doing there?
It means France team is nothing without Zidan.
It means they played 120 minutes for nothing and they were like shadow.
They call it a team not one person.

trix danny...there is no need to be so emotional and angry about all this...the World Cup is over...France and the rest of the world are gradually getting used to the facts...leave the rest up to the FIFA officials! I suggest you calm down a bit...

I agree completely with Charles K... =)
