re-bar is placed in concrete for strength, if and usually when it cracks the re-bar keeps it held together. in large scale projects re-bar is actually stretched for even more strength. the size of the re-bar depends on what is being build and what kind of load its going to need to carry.

Rebar or Reinforcing bar is placed in the concrete to do as its' name implies. To create a harder pad, whether it be driveway or foundation.

However, this is not a case of more is better. In most cases, by my understanding, 12" of space must seperate each piece of rebar for maximum effectiveness.

Rebar is short for reinforcing bar. The rest should be self-explanatory.
