A degree testifies to your technical knowledge of your subject matter, and your ability to learn autonomously. You can demonstrate those qualities without a degree, but it may be hard to do so to a 'traditionalist' employer.
Having said that, a web design company's highest priority would be that you can produce quality work, consistently and efficiently.
You don't need a degree to demonstrate that, but you would need a 'body of work' to show the quality of what you can do, and some kind of testimonial from customers or employers about your work ethic.
One way you might be able to build up that kind of portfolio would be to design some sites for friends, contacts or local businesses in your spare time - maybe even for free. Once you have a few under your belt, you may be in a position to approach web design agencies in search of employment. They will soon tell you what they need from their prospective employees.
It's likely that, without a degree, you would need to start from a junior position and work your way up but, if you are not looking for Big Bucks, that shouldn't be a problem.
Another option is to be self-employed or freelance. That way you would be your own boss, and wouldn't have to demand a degree of yourself!
Good luck!

Nope!
You can get steady work by hiring yourself out as a freelance to other "front end" companies like web design and marketing firms, ISPs, advertising firms, etc.
Another great way to get some mileage (and money) for your web design skills is via "Rent A Coder." www.rentacoder.com. I've hired a number of web design and coding jobs out to independent contractors there.
I still recommend some schooling beyond high school, however. Get yourself an Associates degree at your local technical college. Try marketing, web design, and business programs. You'll learn the IMPORTANT stuff that you'd get with a Bachelors degree in one half the time, one quarter the cost, and one eight the heartburn and hair loss. (Neat how those numbers work out eh?)

It used to be that you had to have a degree but now there are so many programs that 10 year olds can make websites.
Main thing you need to do is get experience and develop a portfolio of actual web sites you have created that have your name on them as the creator if you are going to work for yourself. The hardest thing about freelance is you also have to be the salesperson and that is the difficult part for most people.
If you want to work at an ad agency get the schooling and work as an intern while you are going to school if you can. Most ad agencies want people with at least a B. A. degree. You might be able to get in with an A.A. if you are really good.

NO you dont. You nêed to establìsh your self and put a portfolio together on the web so that others will sêe your work. From your portfolio, people can tell how gơod you are and are willing to work with you. Establishing a client base is actually very hard to do. Gơod luck to you.
