There might be something stuck in the button, also try cleaning out the ball at the bottom.

I can't believe people are still using those trackball mice.
You can't just assume that's what he's using, there are bad optical mice as well that like to glitch out. He said it has problems clicking which has nothing to do with dirt and threads caught in the rollers surrounding the "trackball" which probably doesn't exist.

It could be worn or dirty - the button contacts may be going. If it is old (>2yrs) get a new one. If not, try blowing it out with air.

Maybe your plug it not properly...pushed in...
or
If its a USB Mouse try to plug it in another USB connection
try buying another mouse...
