Can they? Yes. Will they? No.

War is much easier then negotiating on the parts of the people in power because their friends and family don't fight the wars.

It is the height of stupidity to assume that nations could co-exist peacefully with out conflict. Peace could only be achieve through conflict. War is a neccessary 'evil' just as death is on the opposite end of life. War and peace are the neccessary contradictions, the engines of history. As long as we have religion and politics, all nations will continue to fight each other. Get rid of those two items first and peace and harmony will prevail.

No. War is how nations are born and die. If you look at political maps throughout history, you see the births and deaths of countries. Like the earth itself, with volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, and fires, nations rise and fall from and through destruction. The best you can do is stay out of the way or on the side that's winning.

It is very possible for eveyone to live together in peace, just based on fundamentalism in itself. If all of the fundamentalists (Christians, Moslems, Jews, Athiests, Hindus, Buddhists, etc.) followed their respective faiths as they are supposed to be followed, rather than picking and choosing what to translate and hat to ignore, we could be in Utopia. I picked the six faiths up there because they are the most common and most people know what they are:

Christains: these people base their faith on the idea that a higher power loved them so much that he let his own son die so we wouldn't have to. How does a message of love that powerful turn into a war?

Moslems: There are many passages in the Quaran that point to tolerance of all living things. Traditional Moslems respect the work of Allah so much that they will not even recreate his ceations of life on paper via drawing or painting. Destroying those same living things, including people, would result in the disrespect of Allah as well, wouldn't it?

Jews: Jews of modern society have been placed in the same situation they dealt with thousands of years ago. They are on a piece of land that everyone wants just because they feel it belongs to them. If those surrounding Israel would betolerant enough to stay away and stop trying to take what is no longer theirs, the Jews would have no reason to go to war.

Hindus: Its is my understanding that this is a faith based on reincarnation, meaning all life is sacred. Why would you destroy something sacred?

Buddhists: The entire basis for this faith is peace and selflessness. Need I say more?

Athiests: Those of no faith have no real reason to be intolerant. If they are right, then why should they care what others believe? If there is nothing to believe in, then what do people of faith have to lose?

The list goes on, but I am just using the example of faith to show that we could live together without war. Politics could work the same way, as could all differing opinions.

The very concept "nation" is a coercive one, for it is simply a geographical area in which a group holds coercive control over the populous which lies within. War is a battle or series of battles between these these groups, and will always happen because these groups believe that it is ok for them to utilize coercion to get what they want. It is not until we shed the belief or ideology that we can coerce others to gain control of their productive efforts, that war will end.

Do you think? Look into history -- that should speak for itself. Even Ireland (such a Christian country) had the Protestants against the Catholics!!! (Only one example.)

But, can brothers and sisters live together without fighting? What about sister and sister? Sibling rivalry...

People always argue... war is the ultimate argument for countries thus.

Only when the Aliens attack. All countries but two would unite together, causing another world war. Hence after, everything invented to fight against the Aliens and the two non-united countries, would be named after something we saw off of Star Trek.

I think there would always be some kind of conflict but peace is attainable. We just have to elliminate all the Nazis in the White house and Congress first.
