Turtles do fine alone.

Have you ever seen male red ears chase female red ears? The males drive the females NUTS!!! They want to breed continuously. In an enclosed area, males can actually stress out the females to the point the females become exhausted or even sick.

It depends on the turtle's personality... when they are young, they tolerate other turtles, but as they reach breeding age, they become more territorial to both the same and opposite sex. Often they need to be sepearated, especially in a small tank. If you have a big pond, they will be able to have their own space. This is similar to humans; easy to get along when you're young, but as you get older, you have your personalities. As well, like people, different turtle personalities don't mix.

If you get a second turtle, be ready to seperate if they are aggressive to each other, cause a missing toe and bite marks are just cruel to keep them together.

So, to answer your question, yes, some turtles do get livlier in groups, but most don't need a partner to keep them happy. Food makes them happy. :)

Turtles are territorial creatures and prefer to have lots of space to themselves, unless there is sufficent tank space, or if the turtles were raised together, if two turtles are put in a tank randomly can cause one turtle to be more dominant than the other, and cause the less dominate turtle to not eat and starve to death.

when i got my turtle i was told that for more than one, it is best to get them together as babies so they grow up together. i didn't listen and waited awhile before getting the second, and had two turtles that actually fought with each other (snapping, biting). It did not stop with a new and larger habitat. I sold one back to the pet store and have 1 happy turtle now.
