it shows that we come in peace and mean them no harm. started back centuries ago - a person offering their open hand proved that they had no knife or weapon in it.

Because the 'energy', 'enthusiasm', the'spirit', 'the cheer' and the 'warmth' gets passed on to the other chap....
i quote an example: if i was somewhat dejected one morning driving to the office and come across a pal who says "buddy whats happened? you look so sad? are you ok?" then another one with a similar talk....
by the time i reach office and enter my cubicle i start feeling something is wrong...actually if you ask me its all the how the mind works. So please let the heart work for you and cheer up...i say to miself and start my day in the office afresh....very fresh and active and actually go to greet others who may not be as enthusiastic as i am....
hope you get an answer...

The custom dates back to the days when men carried weapons. To offer to shake showed that no weapon was being wielded and that the greeter's intentions were friendly.

This tradition is very old. It is the extension of showing that there are no weapons in my hand...we can be friends.

Out of courtesy and respect for that person. Strangers are friends that we haven't met yet.
