Leave the overdrive switch alone. It is an automatic transmission and will determine when overdrive is best suited for your driving conditions.About the only time that you would turn off the overdrive switch would be if you were towing a heavy load and needed additional power or if you would be driving in a hilly area and the transmission was shifting in and out of overdrive a lot.So go enjoy your new driving privilege and don,t worry about the OD switch.

Overdrive is a high gear in the transmission that allows
the engine to turn or run more slowly to conserve fuel
at higher speeds. If you have a tachometer in the vehicle
you will see that overdrive typically lowers the engines speed
by about 500 rpm. If you have an overdrive switch, you will want
to leave it on to conserve fuel. Only hit the switch to deactivate
the overdrive if you are towing or hauling a large load. Deactivating the overdrive in that case allows for better power
uphills and grades then if the overdrive was engaged.

The over drive switch is more for looks than anything. The transmission shifts by itself when it needs to shift. If you are not going at a fast enough speed the overdrive is not working anyway. Remember this is an AUTOMATIC transmission, as long as it is working properly the transmission will do it itself. Leave the switch in the on position and forget it is there.

overdrive does not kill fuel mileage. i don't like overdrive in town cuz it doesn't need that extra gear except on the expressway. why switch to that higher gear when the car is under 40 mph.
it is good to keep overdrive off when towing in hilly areas cuz the engine helps slow the vehicle down (engine braking) thus helping your brakes and extending the life of your brakes. flat areas/light hills, overdrive on=better fuel mileage. it doesn't hurt to leave the switch alone, but i believe in town the more it shifts, the more wear and tear.

You shouldnt need to turn it off ever unless you are towing a heavy load. I have a Dodge Ram pickup, and the only time I turn it off is when I am towing my boat on hilly backroads, because it dogs in the hills and doesnt downshift to my liking. Also descending hills, OD off will slow you more effectively. So if you are not towing a substantial load, leave your OD on all the time.
Thats why your car starts with it on.

Overdrive puts your car in a gear that helps you save on gas, but kills performance. Use overdrive when you're on the highway, but you'll typically want it off when you're in the city.

Overdrive should only be used at highway speeds. Normal high gear is a one-to-one ratio, and OD has the out-put turning faster than the in-put. (Transmission) What it does is give you higher road speed at lower engine speed, increasing your miles-per-gallon.

Keep your gear shifter in OD - it saves you miles per gallon when you are driving - usually above 45 or 50 miles per hour !
