I lived with my husband and our cats in cheap motels in los angeles until we found an inexpensive trailer to rent, then lived with his sister for zero rent, then bought our own place.

This is a great question and one I can answer from personal experience. My hubby and I were in MS during Hurricane Katrina and lost everything. We found shelter at my son's home (he was not living there at the time) which had some damage downstairs due to flooding. We stayed upstairs. We had staked out a few abandoned houses with second floors and decided that if we had to leave that house for some reason, we would definitely "squat" in another 2 story home and leave a note for the owners the reason why we were there. Other people found shelter under the drive-in banks, around the Walmart store; in cars; just anywhere you could lay your head. It was a pitiful time. Later, the government came with tents. I never thought this would happen to me, but it did. Thanks for asking this probing question.

I would probably seek help from organizations such as the Salvation Army. Possibly go to churches for assistance. If worse came to worse, I would go to a local motel and ask the owner or manager if there was housekeeping work or maintenance work I could do in exchange for a room. If nothing was to be found at that point, I would probably sleep in a rest stop or bus station.

I would go to a church and ask the pastor or priest for advise on where to go and what to do. I would let him know that I would work for any help I received. I would also call on any friends or family to help me. Mostly, I would find out what organizations are out there to deal with my problem and look at it as a short term problem that can be resolved. There is help for the homeless, I'm sure if they do what they can to help themselves.

Hey, i was homeless for nearly four years when i was a young adult so i know how to handle it. Shelters a4re gross and full of diseases. They are not to be recommended to anyone. I slept under bridges and in parks and stuff like that. I also had a dog that kept me warm during cold Canadian winters. I also did a lot of couch surfing. But mostly i just slept in parks and in stair wells if it wqas raining.

First, I'd have to start with family and friends. If that fell through, I'd go to the YWCA. I know many other women who have had to use one. Of course, no temporary placement is ideal, but I believe it is safer than sleeping on the streets. A person can leave themselves vulnerable to dangerous situations if they are not indoors at night.

I would go to a church and ask them...many feed the homeless and offer shelter.
