The quickest way is to look at where the data cable connects to the mother board (called the disk controller). If it is a 40 pin connector (about 2 inches by 1/4 inch), it is what you are calling EIDE. The manufacturer of the motherboard will determine how it is labeled and the color of the controller. If you are using a SATA, the data connector is about 3/4 inches long and about the thickness of 2 sticks of gum. This is provided you are not using an adapter for the hard drive.

To be sure, you need to remove the hard drive and look at the labeling on top of the drive.

I hope this helps.

Just send it to me, and I'll be able to tell just by looking at it. If you don't want to do that, just take the side off your case, and look at it. If the cable that comes from the motherboard is grey, and about 3 inches wide (and looks identical to the cables going to the CD or DVD drives), then it's an IDE drive. If it's half the width of a stick of Wrigley's gum, then it's an SATA drive.

If you can not open the casing you can check your harddrive type from BIOS. Press "Del" button just when you start the computer, and go to first menu of the BIOS(usally inside the first menu). Find your harddrive there (usually there are Gb mentioned near harddrives name). on the left side of your harddrive it will be written IDE or SATA.
