Basic Primal Instinct. Men look for the healthiest woman they can find. In past ages this meant good teeth, good grooming, care about her immediate environment (children would not be infected by sloppy housekeeping). Wide hips and big breasts also helped. Wide hips made for easier birthing and many men lost their wives in childbirth, so this was a concern. Big breasts were symbolic of the ability of the women to nuture their child. None of this was cataloged specfically, it was just instictive, a trait that has not yet been bred out of the human male.
On the other hand, women instinctively look for different characteristics that were not necessarily physical. The ability to sustain a family was not always a matter of brawn, a chieftan or shaman may have been older, and in less than perfect physical shape, but because of his tribal position, he would be able to provide lavishly (at least according to the standards of the time) for a woman and her potential children.
His high status would pass to her sons, so even if he died and early death, she would still be protected. Intelligence was valued because it meant that the man was or could be important to the tribe and therefore provide. Warrior status carried the abiltiy to protect. There was also the possibility of family gain. Sometimes a man would give much to the family of the woman he desired. All of these instinctual reasons entered into a woman (or for that matter, her family) making a choice for her mate. Some of this instinctual behavior has carried over into modern times. We have evolved from our primtative past, but in some ways will still respond instictually for many years to come.

women see what is on the inside while men has to get past the outside to see the inside
just like a study i heard about one time where 3 conversations were played at the same time. men would pick out one conversation and listen to it while women would catch bits of all three
in the end men and women are different!

Because women are the smarter of the species, but more importantly, is that we have to be aware of who is raising our children. How a child's father looks doesn't help to nurture a baby into a mature, independent, caring adult.
