Britain, Germany, Italy, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, .. and the list goes on.... all have had women Presidents (or Prime Ministers).

Why US, considered as the most open-minded country, have never had a woman president?

This country is often described as a nation of equality, but I have come to see that some people are more equal than others. Britain has had ruling women for hundreds of years pre-Magna Carta. they know and understand that women can be just as capable rulers as men. India's female rulers all stem from the bloodline of Ghandi, the most famous man in modern Indian history. Pakistan alays has to be one up on India, so a woman ruler makes sense. The United States often has trouble letting go in major political and social issues. We were the last independent nation with a world status to abolish slavery due to race. We didn't get involved in WW2 until we could identify with those that ere suffering. We refuse to give up our gun rights, though many powerful countries (Britain and France, namely) have abolished the right to bear arms and have witnessed a severe drop in violent crime, almost 50% in London. The American people don't care what happens to the rest of the world unless they feel peronally affected. The entire globe could turn into a society that worships rats and the American people wouldn't even take notice, let alone start worshipping them too. Americans are not as open-minded as we think. Until a woman is able to prove herself an able ruler, she won't be elected. Until a woman is elected, she can't prove herself an able ruler. We are in a stalemate of intolerance.

Truth be told, though we are portrayed as land of freedom and egalitarian ideals, in reality there is a misogynistic sentiment that canvasses a good portion of this country; a segment of the population that is seldom focused on. It is in the backwaters of America’s heartland that we see an aversion to having female in power. Unfortunately, this area of the United States, due to its sheer numbers and political involvement, have so much clout in Washington, that it will be sometime before this trend ends.

Secondly, this country has the most powerful military in the world. Generally countries that are known for their military industrial complex, more than their social services, generally do not provide environments that are conducive for female politicians. Granted the other countries you mentioned, such as Pakistan, India, and England all had Prime Ministers who were female, but their country was not defined so much by their military as other things.

It requires a certain amount of age to get to the place where a run for the President's office is possible.

Since we have THE most powerful Military in the world and rockets golore. Who wants a menopasal women with her finger on the button at her time of the month.

ONE good hot flash when a real stressful situation pops up, and the world is burnt cinder! ALL these other countries combined can't do that, and not that a man can't F up either. But we ALL about girls and that time of the month!

The short answer is that a woman has never seriously run for president. The real answer is that although the U.S. is considered to be the most open-minded country, in reality it is not.

In many people's minds, women are still considered to be unqualified for national leadership, especially for the role as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

One of the positive aspects of the Bush presidency (maybe the only positive one) is that he has demonstrated that gender doesn't have much bearing on one's ability to command the military. He's a man who ducked out of his own military obligations, and he's gotten us into the unholy mess we're in today. No woman could have done any worse.

There are several reasons. One is probably because there are still a lot of men in the U.S. that believe that men are smarter then woman. I've been in jobs where a lot of older men hated having woman as bosses or managers. They had a real problem with it even though the women were great at their job.

Look at American heros like John Glen. He believed that woman shouldn't go into space and prevented a group of qualified woman from becoming astronauts.

America gives off the presence of being open minded, but we are far from it. We still have a lot of growing up to do

I don't know, Shane W. There's nothing saying a president can't be a woman. But I would vote based on qualifications, not gender or color or any other bias. Yes, there are differences among these groups that make them unique. But I won't be fawning over these issues if they're elected, I vote on platforms & qualifications.

1. no campaign funding for good candidates
2. women haven't shown a strong presence in primaries
3. the parties elect their candidate and we vote from those choices. it really isn't possible for an independent to have a chance, so a woman would have to be a rep. or a dem. Unfortunately, both parties spend alot of time blasting strong women for their ideas.... probably so they won't have to run against them in a presidential election
4. women have run for prez, but usually with no more than "i'm a woman" for a campaign.

because "the old boys club" still runs the show. furthermore, women being more focused on the goal, not the limelight, have always worked the background in politics and have far greater influence than is obvious. hillary clinton is the perfect example- bill was just the front man.
