I'm looking into dell and sony...both have comparable details, and both are centrino duos...as far as brand quality and that sort...which is better, or anyother brand for that matter

Well, generally sony's quality is better. and the design of sony is of course better. but it has a price premium for the build quality and design. The design of Sony is considered the best in PC laptops .
Dell build is also very good, but their laptops usually have worse design and are usually heavier. Dell is by any means worth it's money, you can get laptop of any configuration cheapest from the dell, but you may loose on the weight and looks of Dell. The build quality ( I mean parts, not plastic, casing) of Dell is also very good. If you prefer Dell anyway buy directly from Dell's website and use one of the coupons for discount (you can find Dell discoutn coupons from www.techbargains.com for example).
If you want good looking, good built and not very expensive laptop you can go for HP: it is litte more expensive than Dell of the same configuration , but cheaper than Sony. And it's design and weight is better than of the Dell's.

Ask an expert. Go to www.pcworld.com and check the ratings. Everyone has a preference Check your price range, features you need, not ones salesmen push. How long does the battery last? how do you upgrade RAM if you want to? And also, does the bottom heat up? Consumer Reports found several name brands that could actually get hot enough to burn your skin. Will they be in business when you need parts? Is there anyone in the area who can service it?
