Hippies. It was the age of the Great Unwashed. Good grief how we idolize just the idea of some things. The whole hippie movement died a natural death. It was an isolated incident over a confined time period. Unless you were there, you don't understand, no matter how well you think you do. What's coming back might want to call itself by the same name, but those doing so don't have any idea what they're talking about. It was a great experiment of sorts, and it failed.
Sure, hippies didn't like the rules of society and chose not to live by them. While there may be some elements of romance to that which make it appealing, the bottom line is that they were mostly people without the desire or even the ability sometimes to function in the real world. Contrary to our romanticized view of things, in reality you couldn't count on a hippie for anything - they had very little in the way of rules, so even honesty wasn't a virtue. There was often nothing compelling them to refrain from stealing, because they could rationalize anything. Lying was the same. Irresponsible sex was big of course - because they simply refused responsibility in any form.
No, it isn't cool.

I do recall hippies; a bunch of unhygienic pot-head beggars. They named their kids stupid names like, "Free", "Willow" and "Moonbeam". And most of those kids were conceived during L.S.D. experimentation. Yeah, I guess that if you believe there aren't enough bums living in the streets already, you'd also think the return of hippies is a wonderful thing.
