I'm getting my tonuge pierced and i was wondering if i got the right size before i get it done. the professonal that does it requires you to buy the ring before hand. It says the gauge is 14 and diameter is 5/4'' does this song right?

If the piercer requires you to buy the jewlery before hand you should find another shop.
That does not sound professional at all.
Or it sounds like you are doing it yourself, or are getting a friend to do it for you.

A professional piercer would be able to tell you the correct size of jewlery, and gauge.
That size dosent sound right.
14 gauge is correct, but he or she would have to specift which gauge of needle he would be piercing with. Piercers usuially use 14 or 12.
Plus the piercer would have to sterelise the jewlery for you before hand and that usuially takes anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours depending on the cycle on how they sterelize their instruments, and if you bought the jewlery yourself, the piercer has no idea if you bought a cheap low quality metal that will not work well in his autoclave ( stereliser).

This leads me to beleive that either you are piercing yourself, or your piercer is not a professional.

You can have seriously complications with a tongue piercing. Placement is important and it takes a lot of steady hand work. If you are going to this "professional" or are doing it yourself, I would advise against it at all costs.

Go to a professional that provides the barbels. Honestly. I got mine pierced ten years ago and nobody made me get anything on my own. I mean, they should provide you with a sterile stainless steel barbel with the piercing. I've never heard of anyone having to go find their own piercing equipment, much less of a ring?? That doesn't sound right. I think my barbel is a 14 gauge, none the less, but really, find a different piercer!

By the way, it doesn't hurt, they have to put this clamp thing on your tongue. I didn't feel anything..I didn't even know when he was done...it was over in a flash. Just take really good care of it, by rinsing with Listerine a lot...and get the piercing back far enough on your tongue, so that it doesn't rub your bottom teeth and you will be fine. Just be ready to eat soup for about two weeks...seriously. : )

Where are you getting your piercing done? When I got my tongue ring, actually its a stud, the place I got it pierced at supplied the jewelry. If that location does not offer the jewelry then I would go somewhere else.

When you get your tongue pierced your tongue will swell up and you need to worry more about the length of the piercing. Some say that a 14 gage is alright but a 12 gage is better...it all depends on the piercer.

Another reason to get your jewelry at the piercing place is it is more sterile and less likely to cause an infection.

Good luck

14 gauge is the average for piercing the tounge, but what do you mean by 5/4" diameter, just make sure that the barbell will fit through your tounge because if it doesn't it could end up being a part of your tounge

My sister got her tongue pierced, it was really painful to watch her try to talk and eat, but in regards to the tongue ring, it really is a preference. If you are not comfortable with the size that is required at that parlor, go elsewhere. It is your tongue, not to mention your money

...they used a 14 gague on my nose...and yes, it hurt. Remember to use plastic, because you'll ruin the enamel on your teeth pretty fast. Good luck!
