I live in an area that isn't rural but has a huge farming influence. When President Bush and Congress cut the funding for farm aid, they were in an uproar about it. I heard on one of the A.M. radio stations the other day that they are continually lobbying for more money.

The majority of the farmers are self proclaimed conservative. (about 80-85% of voters here are Republican). Doesn't this contradict beliefs?

Don't get me wrong, I support farmer's aid. I just want an answer to the original question.

I consider farmer's aid to be a direct handout due to some tragic event or circumstance. In some cases, this is the same situation for welfare cases. Especially the ones that involve children.

Most farmers would go broke if not for government payouts. The average farmer's income is equal to the amount the government pays him. When producing a commodity the economic law pretty much states that you can only break even. This is why farmers are constantly clamoring for more money from the government. The benifit to society is a constant supply of cheap commodities. The main benificieraries of cheap commodities are agribusiness companies and consumers, although consumers would probably be better off health wise with a little more expensive food that is not processed as much as what we currently have. BTW Willie Nelson has never helped anyone but himself hahaha, his farm aid concerts are pretty much bs. I dont support farm programs but I have to take it or else I cannot compete against my neighbors who are my main competitors for land . New Zealand got rid of all its farm supports and the only people hurt by this were people who manufactured farm machinery and people who produced farm imputs. US agriculture would be a lot healthier if it were not for these farm payments. Farmers now manage their farms in oder to recieve the largest farm payments they can get instead of managing their farms the most efficent way possible or finding alternative streams of income. Instead of rewarding the most efficent producers we are rewarding businesses which comply with government production standards.

That's interesting. What happened to Willy and the boys. I read recently about a company building an Ethanol plant that is supposed to help out local farmers in the region I live. Have to look into the subject more.

Because foreign government issue huge tax incentives to their farmers. Without a similar program in the U.S., this country would be as dependent on foreign countries for food as we are for oil. Welfare, on the other hand, is getting something for absolutely nothing. So if we conservatives ***** about it, they should just grin and bear it.

To clarify, I work in retail not on a farm.

Farm aid goes to help them. so of course they are for that
They cannot collect welfare so they are not for that
They hire immigrants and pay low wages so they are for that.
I don't know if you just got here or what.
People vote for what benefits them.
That's a fact of life.
