I don't get it... everytime I turn it on, frost will form all over it within an hour... It looks like a huge ice cube then! What's actually happened with my AC? Can I still fix it?

If not, I want to buy a new Air Conditioner (AC)... how do I pick the good one according to its PK or BTU or whatever? What is the specification for Hi-Quality Air Conditioner? Since I totally don't understand about this Air Conditioner stuffs at all... help me, please?!

Had the same problem and a very smart heating professional told me to change the filter to one that isn't so restrictive. I was using filters that filtered out all kinds of things and it was slowing down the air flow too much. Lets get technical; the thermostat tells the ac unit to run because the house is hot. The circulating house air is barely moving because of the restrictive filter. The ac unit is working it's little heart out and the freon (or other r12 stuff) is getting very cold but the circulating air isn't enough to allow for an exchange of temperature that will cool your house. So, humidity from outside air will freeze on the coils and build up until the coils are clogged with frost and then nothing will work at all. Answer; change air filter, if that doesn't work check your cold air return duct for obstructions (it might be crushed somewhere too). Open all heat vents all the way. As a last test, take off the cold air return grill and leave it wide open while the ac unit runs, and see if frost forms then. If it does, then call a very smart professional and listen to what they say. Good Luck

I have the same problem

it's really simple, it just needs to be thoroughly cleaned (inside and out)

also, don't always put your ac on the highest mode or temperature
(when you always do this, it makes the ac produce more water which will just freeze since some of the parts are clogged with dirt)

try doing these, I've done it and it works for me
if it doesn't, try asking for professional help

and if all else fail, get a new one

Sounds like you may have too much moisture in the air. Try to run a dehumidifier at the same time to dry the air.
Also, running a fan at all the surfaces that get covered by ice (before the ice forms!), should help this.

Simple answer. Not enough airflow inside. dirty filters etc. Leak in "Freon" system, low freon. Trying to take the home temperature too low.. Call a pro. Also when buying a new system , ask lots of questions. Get at least 4 quotes. Check web site http://www.amana-hac.com

not enought air flow over the evaporator for the amount of time the compressor is on. Maybe fan is blocked, air flow is blocked. Evaporator is getting so cold (becasue it is not absorbing heat from flowing air) that it is causing water in the air to condense and freeze on it. Run the compressor less if possible or be sure air filter is not clogged, dirty.

You are either low on low on refrigerant, or your evaporator coil is plugged solid. You may need to toss it.

Contact me with info on what you are trying to cool, and why, and I'll give you some purchasing tips.

It is dirty-- either the coil or maybe the filter. You don't need a new one.
