Is there a minimum on the trips you have to book to maintain your status as a travel agent,or would it be smarter to just join a travel club?

There are some folks still doing this. I would not advise it, however. First, the discounts are not what they used to be. Second, you have to develop relationships with suppliers to get perks, and if you are not serious about selling travel, forget it.

You can make money as a travel agent, but you must be hard-working, and enterprising these days. You will not get anywhere just being an order-taker. Those days are gone. You must be a travel counsellor. What you are really selling is your expertise and ability to plan vacations, not travel. Actually, travel sells itself.

Becoming a travel agent is wonderful because not only do you save on your own travel, you may be able to write-off your own travel on your taxes. And make money when your friends, family and even strangers book travel with you. Since the travel industry has changed with most people booking their travel on the Internet, you should consider becoming a referring travel agent. You simple refer people to your site and they can book the travel for themselves or you can help them by taking some of the free travel agent classes. The discounts are not what they used to be.

The discounts you get are not worth what the earnings are, trust me.

I am finally getting out of the business after 10 years.

Seek a higher paying position. Becoming a travel agent is not a good career move.
