OK. It is the galaxy we are in. It is about 100,000 light years across and 2,000 light years thick. It has a central bulge that is about 6000 light years thick. It is a barbed spiral galaxy that is slightly distorted by the campanion galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds. Our sun is about 30,000 light years from the center, which has a 4 million solar mass black hole. The following link shows a galaxy that probably looks fairly close to the way that the Milky Way looks:

First you have to spell it correctly.
When I was really small my dad took me to the library one day. He was looking at an astronomy book and falling asleep. I decided to try and keep him awake, so I pointed at the big photo on the page before him and I said "Dad, what's that?"
He mumbled "The Milky Way." And that was the first time I had heard of such a thing. And I wasn't sure I had heard correctly anyway.

It is the galaxy in which our solar system resides. We see it as a band of faint light across the night sky.
