I have pcos and we are trying to get pregnant but since my periods are so irregular it's hard to tell when i'm ovulating. My doctor suggested Glucaphage (sp) but i'm concerned about taking anything in fear of birth defects. Has anyone successfully used this medicine?

I can understand how fustrating it is to have a baby as my husband and I are trying ourselves.I am taking the generic for Glucose( metformin) to control my PCOS as I am insulin resistant.Glucophage is basically protecting you in case you do develop gestational diabetes when you are pregnant.I have not had no problems using this medication..The only side effect I had was dry mouth--which constantly makes you drink
There are some wonderful websites that can help you track your ovulation..
Good luck!

To date there has not been any evidence of birth defects due to glucophage use during or prior to pregnancy. As a PCOS sufferer myself I had wished my doc would have offered this medicine as a helping hand when I was ttc. However, there are side effects to the drug which I was unaware of - gastrointestinal issues - you may suffer painful gas and/or frequent trips to the restroom with strange bowel movements... When glucophage is combined with Clomid it seems to help much better than all alone.

I found myself pregnant (twice) after following a low carb and low glycemic index diet... This is my best advice if you're wanting to avoid other drugs... Once pregnant see your doctor right away and ask for a progesterone draw to ensure that you're producing enough to keep the baby safe - as this is often a problem for women with PCOS.

Best wishes!

DO IT GIRL! It totally works. My husband and I tried for 6 years with no luck, my periods were non existent. As soon as I started the metformin (gloucophage) I was having a regular cycle after years of no period at all. It took about 10 months and I exercised and lost weight, but finally I got pregnant. My doctor took me off the metformin after the 1st trimester and I had a beautiful, healthy baby girl! I got back on the metformin when she was 15 months old and 4 months later I was pregnant again! I took the metformin through the first trimester again and I had a perfectly healthy little boy! This drug is amazing, if it weren't for the metformin I would not have either of my children. Give it a try. Email me if you want more info! Good luck!

I have PCOS & I'm on Glucophage & Glucophage will NOT help you get pregnant. It will help your blood sugar since most with PCOS are insulin resistant. If you have PCOS & your cycles are irregular than you should be on Clomid & Norval to help you ovulate.

My cycles are irregular & the only thing that helps is if I take clomid each month to ovulate & then my cycles are back to normal.
