Aaron is correct except 1 thing the G also stands for 3 "G" which is the lastest in mobile technology and this is very good to have on a GSM phone as this is the best network quality for a GSM phone. On a CDMA Phone like mine 1XRTT is the best network which stands for 1x Radio Transmission Technology and has better connections than a standard Digital "D" network.

The "G" may appear in all kinds of network.

Well, phones that have their GPRS activated. Here is the legend:

G- GPRS is on/You can use it
G w/ a slash- You can't us it. E.g. when you are sending message
G in a box- You are using the internet on your cellphone.

That's good news for you! It means you may use Internet on your phone!
