At my work, all the doors are handicap accessible, which means there is a button on the wall that can be pressed to open the door all the way and leave it open for 10 seconds. All day I see people who are not handicapped and not carrying anything, press the button and stand there like morons waiting for the door to open so they can walk through it unebated. Why do people do this? Are these the laziest people in the entire world?

You can not always tell by looking at someone whether or not they are disabled. They may have MS or Lupus or RA, and still look 'normal' but lack the strength to push open a revolving door. Besides, who is it harming? If they are taking the handicapped spaces in the parking lot without a sticker, that's a different story. Then you have lazy and morally handicapped.

We live in a fast paced society and that means people are accustomed to convenience whenever and wherever they can get it. To use a handicapped button when not handicapped is a combination of convenience and laziness on there part. People don't do the "traditional" ways much any more. They would rather use the short cuts of life.

I press the button when I have my 2 year old in tow because she usually gets in the way of me opening the door; or I use it at school when I have a load full of books and don't have the back strength to pull open the heavy doors that is even more heavy by the mechanics of it all.

These, obviously, are the same people that enter the exit doors or exit the enter doors, AND in the grocery stores, stand there with the clear glass freezer doors open, just looking. When there is no need to.

I was going to say "lazy" but it would be lazy to go with the obvious answer so how about: They use the button because it's easer to press the button and minimize the amount of germs they get on themselves as opposed to having to grip a handle.

Yes but it is even worse when they park in handicapped spots! As someone who is temporarily handicapped, it really angers me when I see them do that. I reported a mail truck that did it last week by my doctor's office.

They see this button !!! A signal goes off in their brain. "Ah how lucky I am, I get to push a button to open the door instead of having to work hard to open it ! "

laziness does have something to do with it but after that it's just habitual... you see someone else do it and then you do and then every time you walk up to the button all of a sudden your doing it without thinking... still that is just plain lazy

Yes, they are lazy...one of my pet peeves too. I try to set an example, and on bad days, mutter to myself or complain loudly to a companion. I don't know if that will change anything, but makes me feel better anyway. Maybe their Mommas did not teach them better.

Why don't you make sure they're not using ramps either. This is a national crisis. And especially the handicapped urinals.
