Since the advent of computers it seems that we are writing less with pen and paper. I am thinking that handwriting may soon become "Art" and any one who wich to learn "Handwriting" will have to attend special institutions.

That depends on how you define "handwriting"... Do you mean printing or cursive? I believe cursive/running writing/linked script... whatever it gets called these days, will become obsolete, however standard print will remain a basic essential. Mind you the standard that I see a lot of high school students writing levels at is absolutely atrocious!

Good question... whatever the case is, I really think that handwriting should be taught becasue it helps one to learn how to read and spell (as well as recognizing the letters of the alphabet). On top of that, there is no way possible that someone is going to be around a computer 100% of the time....

Hand writting is very important and i believe that it will always be taught expecially in elementary schools if they dont know how to write on paper how are they going to sign there signatures and things like that on paper work. Handwritting wont ever be a art i think it will always be important

The near future? Maybe, but not likely in my opinion. Some things just can't be recorded verbally, because it's too public. Perhaps if everyone has like a computer strapped to their arm in the future like a cuff, it would be plausible, but what will happen to writing notes on the back of your hand? Besides, people would be disadvantaged if they're slow typists for whatever reason.

It's a thoughtful idea though, but I don't think it's likely.

Handwriting isn't taught in many schools; It just gets "worked in" with the other subjects.

handwriting class was always just the name of teaching you how to draw the letters. without it, at the elementary level, all other language would be useless...since you wouldn't know what a D looks like, let alone type it.

so it'll stay, for awhile

Absolutely. If nothing else, it is a way to develop children's fine motor skills, and there will always be a need for grafitti. ;~)

Would you want the option not to learn how to write by hand?

No. For all the reasons given, and to enable people to be understood when they do write....as a middle school teacher, sometimes it's quite a challenge.
