Rain clouds and thunderstorm clouds appear dark because the light from the sun is not making it through the clouds and to our eyes. The millions of tiny water droplets in the cloud help scatter, reflect, and absorb the sun's light as it travels down to earth. From space these clouds look very bright because they are reflecting and scattering lots of light, but from the ground it will appear very very dark.

Clouds are only moisture, the thicker or deeper they are the darker they appear. Many things are happening in the clouds from the passive convection seen as cumulus, white puffs.
To the layers which are stratus & grey, to the active Cumulus nimbus which is hot air being rapidly convected to high altitudes forming thunder storms.

It's the density of the clouds. There is more water in suspension in a rain cloud than others.

It's the thickness of the cloud layer and the amount of light passing through.

rain water is not pure water.. its slightly acidic.. maybe pH of 6-6.5.. the heavy build-up maybe change the colour.. just like pee thats light-colored will become darker when its accumulates? this works for fluids that are either acidic or alkaline

I think they're black because of higher density.
