If he is somewhat soft and roundish or squarish like a low stool, then he is likely to be a poof (or pouffe, correctly spelt).
The term used in any other context is considered politically incorrect and derogatory these days, so whatever his sexual persuasion, he wouldn't be your friend for long if you called him that. The accepted word is 'gay'.
