I think guilty is the right feeling, but maybe there is something else there. Maybe the lure of being close to you is something she really enjoys, but perhaps she doesn't talk to you for periods of time because she feels like she is leading you on. Or maybe she just wants a reaction out of you, every time you let her get close your succumbing to her abilities as a woman to warrant worry. If you started to show an interest in another I think she'll show her true feelings, whether it is wanting you back or realisation that your not hers anymore.

Ask yourself why she became your ex. There seems to be some issues she needs to resolve and you do not seem to be part of the answer, if you was then there would not be that pattern. I think you are correct in having her as an "X" Girlfriend, because she is showing unstable activity.
