I've used all sorts of different peppers. It didn't seem to hurt the birds or the squirrels. The squirrels just tried harder.

The best thing that I've found that works for me is placing a 5' length of guttering downspout over the birdfeeder pole. Let it remain loose around the pole so that it moves or makes noise when the squirrel tries to climb it. Also, rub vaseline all up on down the guttering and or birdfeeder pole. They can't get a grip on it. This has kept the squirrels out of my feeders for several years now. Also make sure your birdfeeder is several feet away from any tree branches that a squirrel may jump from.

Cayenne pepper can irritate the bird's eyes as it is shuffled around.
I bought a squirrel baffle at Home Depot (also available at Lowes, and super Walmart) that fits on any normal bird feeder pole. It costs about $12 and now the squirrels just walk on the ground and pick up the left over seed. It looks like a green 2 ft long over-sized can.

It helps to not have your feeder hanging from a tree. Keep it on a pole away from a tree.

The supplies are a bit of an investment. But it is worth th money you will save on feeding bird seed to the squirrels.

I hung my fowl feeder from the coolest of 10' piece of one million/2" electric powered conduit bent interior the middle to a 40 5 degree perspective and positioned in a hollow in a concrete base (from the bottom instantly up, the off at 40 5, with a heavy twine stuck interior the coolest to dangle the fowl feeder from. by no skill had squirrel complications because too small to grip, too steep, too extreme to leap. If the squirrels are coming down from the coolest, a cone formed "chinese language hat" loosely fixed on the twine will tilt and unload them. If arising from bottom an similar gadget - in the experience that they can't leap previous it - or between the spinning plates looks to artwork properly. some people positioned out corn on the cob to feed the squirrels faraway from the birds.

I have tried all the suggestions, and I found the only thing that worked for me was squirrel proof feeders. And I have a separate feeder for them, the kind you put the corncob or whatever you want on.The pepper didn't work at all..... try the feeders, they have them pretty reasonable now at the stores.

Just feed the squirrels separately, use wood chunks or pine cones smother with peanut butter and roll in bird seed then hang them away from bird house. This works I do it.
