First of all the horse is everything inn barrel raceing as you know. Second, it takes lots of practice for both you and the horse. Quick breaking and fast acceleration are needed for the horse, you need balance, the ability to communicate to the horse what you want it to do. And lots of paitence. Good luck

start slow. learning the pattern well and being able to run it smoothly is more important at first than speed. do a lot of work to strengthen the inside hind leg so your horse doesn't need to lean into the turns as much [ slows you down and can lead to falls if slippery]. learn to ride in a way that doesn't interfere with the horse, sit balanced and quiet and leave his head alone, he should know the pattern and need very little guidance from you.

Before you teach it to go around the barrels, teach it to "rollback". That is
sliding and pivoting. After it has learned that, teach it to do it around the barrel. Then ramp it up for speed.
