I don't know if there´s someone who doesn't associate/hasn't associated dark with evil. Although many people think it is a cliché, I haven't seen a culture that doesn't do that. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's because things look different when we're in the dark. Inoffensive things seem oddly distorted when there is no light, don't they? Perhaps it's because you start wondering if there's something there, something you can't see and that may cause you harm - hence the association with evil. I'd be glad if someone could find an historical connection, though - the question got me curious...

Dark is often associated with evil, but not always. Sometimes, white is associated with death, for example. But it is true that we often visualize evil with black, or even red (I think of hell). Why? Because it is a cliché, since we were children, we have always seen things from this angle.

Dark is not really associated with evil but with Ignorance. When it is dark no one can see objects and it is all encompassing with no sense of distinction or discrimination. Only when light is there can our consciousness direct our vision to see all objects with contours dicriminated by their colours and also their shadows which are always dark. Wrong doing or evil is associated with ignorance as shadows because of lack of proper perspective of discrimation of mind between good and evil. Proper spiritual guidence together with righteous conduct is essential to over come evil by eshewing all kinds of harm unto others and also deliver oneself from it.

Because the earliest Gods were Sun Gods and when the Sun God rested the evil could creep around the land. If Sun was God then night was assumed to be time of least protection by God and hence strongest time for evil

Because we are afraid of the unknown in general and assume that which is known is good. The dark hides things from us and it is assumed that which is unknown is bad. Usually this is just the opposite because we guard against that which is unknown and assume that which is seen or open to the light is good. Humans are funny creatures.

Because Evil is supposed to use the darkness as a cover.

It is true in reality as well. Most burgleries happen under the cloak of darkness...
