Actually, it came LONG before Roman times. The cycle of the phases of the moon is 29.5 days. The ancient Babylonians used an alternating 29 and 30 day month calendar. THis gave 12 months in a year (one cycle of seasons), but the result doesn't come out to be exact. They would add an additional month in some 'leap years' to get things back in sync. The ancient Egyptians used a 12 month year with 30 days in each month and 5 'festival days' each year.
The fact that the female cycle and the cycle of the moon are so close was a crucial part of the old 'Mother Goddess' religions. Many women today will say that they are 'on their moon' at certain times of the month. However, it is a coincidence that the cycles are so close.

There is a lot of consideration given to Roman mythology. However, the calender was not a Roman invention. They just picked it up and added names. The original calender is based upon the Lunar cycles. (1 lunar cycle = 29.53059 days) As you can see, we still have roughly 30 days per month. As you can also see, there will be difficulty when the leftover 0.5 days per month add up. The Romans were the ones responsible for attempting to stagger the calender (30/31) to make up the lost day had every 2 months. Therefore, 1 month is now 30 or 31 days.

I have always heard that it was based on the cycle of the moon as it goes through its phases. From one full moon to the next is approximately 30 days....
Is the menstrual cycle linked to the phases of the moon? I don't think so because even though they have the same duration, different women menstruate at different times of the month, not all when there is a full moon or whatever.

it actually comes from roman times
they knew the year was 365 days so they divided it into 12 months, alternating 30 day and 31 day months
complications arose later when augustus was proclaimed a god because his month (august) only had 30 days so it was changed to 31 days so he wouldn't be a lesser god and the extra day was taken off february because february was the last month of the roman year
