Earthworms need moist skin to get oxygen to perform respiration. The moist surface allows for diffusion of this oxygen. If the skin isn't moist, the oxygen wouldn't be able to diffuse and the earthworm would die. But that doesn't mean that earthworms should live in the water, either. Ever notice them all over the place after a rainstorm? That's because they can't be totally submerged, either-- they'd drown.
