It is pretty hard to miss the contractions. Usually you loose your mucus plug, the baby drops down and you have bloody show too and sometimes your water breaks. It is very rare for a woman to miss these signs.

You may find that you have a little bit of blood and some mucous when you go to the bathroom. This may be an indicator of labor but it is also common to lose your mucous plug several weeks beforehand. A "bloody show" is most likely a sign of impending labor. You might have a backache and you will start having short, mild contractions that will increase in ammount, intensity and length. If these contractions do not increase and if they are alleviated by resting, they are not real labor. One definite sign of labor is the rupture of your bag of waters. If you experience a large gush or a constant trickling of fluid, you will need to head to the hospital.

You'll start to notice that you're having regular contractions and that they begin to get stronger and closer together. It'll feel like strong cramps moving around your middle. Some women also feel them down into their legs or in their backs.
Drinking a glass of water and resting won't make them go away. (If the contrax were due to dehydration then that would probably stop them.) Changing what you are doing (moving from resting to active or active to a resting state) won't seem to change them. Eventually you will need to concentrate to get through them and you probably won't be able to talk through them.
You may have an increase in pelvic pressure, feeling the baby pressing down to get out.
You may or may not have your water break. (Mine didn't break until the pushing stage with all three babies. Two times I had AROM and one time it broke on it's own.)

Are you pregnant and in your last month? Labor feels like a tightening pain below your stomach. Call a doctor or get to a hospital.

Contractions feel like really bad stomach cramps (think of bad diarrhea cramps) that continue to get worse, also you may loose a yokey mucus like plug (might have a little blood in it) or you will dribble or stream out a pickle juice looking water. Trust me you won't NOT know.

Trust me...you will know. Early labor can be a little hard to detect because at first, it's not so bad but when active labor starts, there is no mistaking it.

The obvious, mucus plug, water breaking.... (that is if you see the mucus plug, and if your water breaks)
My doctor told me to go to the hospital if your contractions are 5 min apart, and last more than an hour. (and trust me, you'll know you are having contractions...)

Either your water will break which makes you feel like you urine on your self. Or you feel tight pains (contractions ) that come and go with in every 5 mins or less.
