it could be your timing belt. This is why manufacturers recommend the timing belt replacement at 60,000 mi intervals. Of course, you don't metion how many miles are on the car.

When this belt breaks while driving, the engine looses proper timing for delivery of fuel/air mixture and it just stops, with no ability to startup during subsequent cranking attempts. Of course there are other failures that could case these same symptoms.

Things to do:
1) Open oil cap and have someone looking at visible portion of valve train while you crank the engine. No rotation indicates a broken belt.
2) check to see you have spark
3) Check to see you have fuel pressure

My first thought would be the timing system, perhaps you have thrown the belt. Other possibilities would include something in the ignition, like Ford's ignition module which was a little too susceptible to heat. To be honest, I'm not sure what type of distributor you have, but if you can just pull the cap off and have someone turn the key, you may find that the rotor isn't turning. That would indicate a bad timing belt.

Start with the basics. Check for spark using a spark plug type tester grounded to the engine and hooked to one of the plug wires. Also check for fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a fuel pressure gage.

Check the timing chain and the fuel pump. It could easily be one of those two things.

Could be a clogged fuel filter, make sure you are getting fuel to the carb,(bad fuel pump?). The electronic module could be bad.
