Good, old fashioned calamine lotion is the best solution. Alternatively go to the pharmacy and get some nappy rash cream like drapolene/sudocrem (if in the UK). That should work brilliantly.
If you want to stop yourself getting bitten in the first place, make a botanic insect repellent using the essential oil of catnip (yes, catnip) diluted to 5% in any type of carrier oil. Research has shown that it is 10x more repellent than DEET (the most common commercial insect repellent, which is now thought to cause brain activity disruption and cancer- nice).

Go to and outdoor shop and ask for a 'click, dont scratch'. Or if you have a piezo ignition from an old gas fire or camping stove, give the bite a couple of clicks, this will stip the itching.

Probably midges. Keep the bites cold and don't scratch them - toothpaste sometimes works.
