I am not a religious person but yes, it still matters what we do.

We still have to pay our bills, we still have to be law abiding citizens, we still have with work well with other people, we still have to be "good" citizens, we still have to do the right thing and we still have to make those close to us happy.

We don't need God to tell us to behave in a certain way.

First of all:
THERE IS A GOD!
and He is Jesus Christ, our Savior
And yes, it does matter what we do in life.
The more you praise Him, the more blessings you will receive in heaven. Also, if you follow His will, then He will bless you with countless blessings here in earth. But only if you accept Jesus as your personal Savior can you be saved.

Probably some of you don't believe in God, but i just want to say this
It is virtually impossible for there to be NO God.
There are billions and billions of things and events that could have happened in the creation of the universe, and WE are what happened.

The slightest change in the force of gravity or the weight of the atom can ruin the balance of the forces of our solar system, and let the planets come crashing into each other or flying into space.
But instead these forces and weights are predetermined, fixed so that our universe is this beautiful see of heavenly bodies... Fixed so that the earth may exist.
As if it were all a part of a grand scheme by an omnipotent God.

Or are you really that naive, and choose to believe in such an IMPOSSIBLE probability; that all of this, the universe, planet earth, the human race, came to be BY LUCK alone?

Think about it.

Yes, it matters very much what we do.

Ethics of actions taken or not taken a religion or even a philosophy. These are attempts to selves and why we act as we do. Action which arise from the attributes of our species, and as a species we are a social animal.

As a social animal some actions work well (doing right) and others are detrimental (doing wrong) and our interpretation of such acts over time evolve into religions and philosophies. Even so, those religions and philosophies only look at what already exists.

Being an Atheist all of my adult life I have found it interesting that many people seem to expect Atheists to have no ethics or morals. Clearly nothing could be farther from the truth.

I believe there are no such things as gods.

But we should all live our lives with good principles, and leave a legacy of some sort. Even if that's just being a good, kind person.

There is a "religion" that in which god does not exhist. Buddhism believes that universe has always been here and always wil be for eternity. They live by certain principles and most(who are true buddhists) do not believe in a god. they just meditate and live according principles which may differ according to different "sects".

Christianity, Islam and Judaism are also religions that have people follow certain basic principles, but they do believe in a beginning and an end to our universe and believe in a supernatural being.

well, i personally do believe that there is a God and that's where our morality comes from. but Freidrich Nietzsche would say that "God is dead" meaning that people look to God less and less than they used to. Because people are becoming less concerned with God, morality is dissipating, and the world is becoming more chaotic and war torn.

It then is the responsibility of society and humanity to restore morality, and set up a new set of "rules".

its does matter what we do in life, because even if there is no God to make us act in a certain manner, the rest of society is there to set up a set of checks and balances in a way. If everyone entirely let go of morals, society would become too chaotic and would eventually reach total anarchy and would not be able to function.

Even if there was no God, it would matter what we did in life just for our own sense of self worth, & also for the sake of mankind.

Can you imagine what kind of society we would have if no one cared about anyone else? There would be a total breakdown of all that makes life worth living.

Unfortunately we see that happening today in pockets of the world. From the lack of anyone caring people are starving, some parents leave their families to fend for themselves, & unecessary hardships are imposed on innocent people.

The flip side to all this is that by doing as many positive things as we can & seeing how wonderful they can affect others, we can achieve happiness for ourselves.

This is a valid question.

What do you consider as God, as life? More importantly.

If there IS a God does it matter what you do in life?

Looking at the other post, I see a variety of answers reflecting a variety of perspectives.

Things I know:

Proclaimed Atheist are NOT reposnsible for many of the cruelties of war, torture, slavery, oppression, theft, genocide, etc, while some Labled Religious individuals (many of whom are clergy or officials of their organization) have inheirited the practice as birthright and continue to carry the tradition of harming their fellows. I considered these types as "Unproclaimed Atheist hiding behind a religous banner.

If there is a God, many of the Humans do not seem to take that God seriously enough to follow the basic commandment "Do to no Human what you would not have done to yourself," or "Treat other Humans as you would like to be treated." These type of members have been acting like players of a poorly supervised crooked rugby game.

To answer your own question, I recommend the sight of Thomas Paine , listed below. "The Age of Reason," "Rights of Men," "Common Sense' might lend some perspective.

" I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow-creatures happy." - Thomas Paine

Religion is reflected in your behaviour. If one behaves as quoted by Mssr. Paine, then that person and share the same religion. DOING justice, LOVING mercy, and ENDEAVORING to make our fellow creatures happy.

For the "religious" and those who consider themselves as such:
Example is the Best Teacher. What behaviour do you demonstrate to influence to attract an Atheist towards membership in your organization. Do you admonish your own when they set upon those whom have not offended them? Or do you just sit idle, as crusifiction after crusifiction takes place, denying as Peter denied the Way-Shower?

Without a God, the moral and social imperative is still required. Given the lack of effort to understand, the narrow-mindedness, and pathological lies told themselves and congregations, they may as well not believe in the Diety at all. They do not seem to meet the minimum requirement of faith, which is the size of a mustard seed.

Logic, reason, rationality, Love and common sense, will make it on Earth as it is in heaven. They will also put one on the path towards God.

well there IS a God. but IF there was not a God yes i think it would still matter

2006-07-15 00:37:24 · answer #8 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

It must matter to yourself. If you do things that are good or bad considering what you think. Ethics instead of religion is what regulates your behaviour.

If you act bad, other people will correct you by telling you or reject you or punish you in ways - in addition to the feeling you get when you do something bad: self-correction.

If you act nice, other people will give you positive feedback and you will get your award in this good feeling and self esteem.
