Let's see...some things that trigger a migraine for me are aspartame (check chewing gum), bright sunlight (have to wear sunglasses even in winter), sleeping TOO much....
Preventions : Once you feel one coming on do something about it IMMEDIATELY...don't wait for it to start hurting....take something at the FIRST twinge of pain, put a cold compress on the side of the pain and lay down in a dark quiet area.
If you don't have a cold compress available (visiting family or out of town....ect)....a frozen bag of veggies does the trick! And believe it or not.....everyone says NOT to drink caffeine when you have a migraine, BUT I have found that having a cup of coffee or can of coke with a migraine actually HELPS. (Look on the back of a box of Excedrin Migraine.....one of the ingredients is CAFFEINE!)

I suffered from migraines for many years. While on a trip to India, a doctor there told me to drink a large glass of water as soon as I had any indication that one was coming on. It does not completely relieve it, but the pain is reduced by about 90% and does not last more than an hour or so. That is having just a regular headache, which is eased at that point by Advil.

Water is key in preventing many health issues, including migraines.
Magnetics help by increasing circulation. Each of our cells have a positive and negative charge. In the presence of a magnet, the cell must move thereby increasing circulation. If you use a fairly strong magnet as you feel it coming on, you can prevent it.
Get the Kenko Super Mini. I guarantee it. http://www.yourwellnesshome.net/kenkomagneticpromopads.html

I take Depakote. It hasn't totally eliminated them, but now instead of two or three headaches a week, I might get one or two a month. I've typed migraines into the search engine. You'll come up with several sites with useful information.

Mami had a lot to say to this question. Clearly one persona was just not enough for her. She likes you 4 times more than the average answers user. Tip her in cashews unless she brushes up more than 14 times in a 20 minutes period. Then upgrade to Macadamia.

My wife suffers with these and she was able to reduce the severity and frequency by increasing her light exercises. This helps increase blood flow and dilate the vessels. She does use some OTC medications to help.
A recent study said that increasing the amount of sleep you get will help you, too.
