It's an American thing. Not "creepy" but old fashioned.
In the old days they had so many kids working on "the farm" that is all they heard "ma" or "pa" they started calling each other that as a joke. It was passed down through generations.
IOW, I'm not Mrs. Smith or Mr. Jones, I am just Ma or Pa.

I live in Australia, and we call each other mummy and daddy when the kids are around. But when we are talking to each other directly, we call each other by ou first names or our pet names eg. Bub, Hun, Darl etc..

My husband and I referred to each other as "Momma" and "Daddy" when the kids were young but reverted back to other terms of endearment once the kids got older.

People can call themselves whatever they want. Don't know if this is an American thing or not.

Alot of people also call their spouses, "my ole lady" or "my ole man". I can't necessairly call my husband "my ole man" because I'm a few years older than he.
