In order to be considered for admission to a Master's program in the U.S., one must:

- be close to completing a Bachelor's degree, since application is usually made during one's final year as an undergraduate. Applicants must submit official transcripts from the undergraduate institution.

- achieve high scores on the GRE exam

- have a high undergraduate GPA (usually above 3.0, and higher in one's specific area of study)

- submit three excellent lettters of recommendation written by one's undergraduate professors (the letters from professors in the specific field of intended graduate study will be the most important)

- write a statement of application (sometimes called a personal statement) in which one writes about one's educational background and goals, and demonstrates familiarity with the field of study in question

- include a sample of one's written work (usually a 20 page paper written for an undergraduate class in the specific field of study one is hoping to pursue

This last element is not always required, but it is usually a good idea to submit a sample of current work anyway.
