Aw, but 42's such a simple answer to give.
Think about it, how could we, as lowly humans, understand things like that, things completely beyond our understanding.
As far as I am concerned we are here simply because evolution made us so that we could survive in this world, and thus the meaning is to keep our species going by reproducing.
You can see why Douglas Adams resorted to using a number.
