it depends on the present interpretation of religion. However, there are different religions and a religion itself divides into categories from one society to another. so i think a religion all by itsef can not hold us back but ideas can because religion is the anaesthetic of socities and especially powerful persons can use religion to hold a nation back.

No. Yes. It's not religion per se, but how it is used.

1) During the Renaissance, the Catholic Church (a political power that uses religious practice and teaching as its media) held Galileo back, but also financed research of its own in astronomy and other sciences. Its contribution to art during that time is immense.

2) Medicine came out of herbalism, which in some cultures has (or had) strong ties with religion.

3) To take a very different tact, we are progressing at such a rapid rate that we need people and/or organizations to slow us down and encourage us to question what we are doing and why. Religion is a reasonable means to that end, although it tends to be misused by dogmatists. So religion could be helping us think about how far we want to go with medical technologies. Blanket bans, though, like the call to end all stem cell research, aren't about discussion and do little to help us collectively make informed, ethical and careful decisions. As it's practiced in the U.S., religion isn't doing much to help. Which is a real waste of something so valuable.

I think it was Aristotle or Plato who believed that Religion was just a matter of "controlling" people and keeping them in line.

Some people think this is true and that's why they're so much against it. People today feel that they don't need morals and can live with their own rules providing they are basically "good".
The only problem with this thought is that everybody has their own belief about what is "good".
I just don't believe that religion holds us back at all. From what? Being hedonists?

I personally believe that without religion, (whichever you prefer), you have to have something solid to turn to in hard times.Sometimes we're just not strong enough to handle some things on our own.

I heard an interesting quote today: "If there isn't a GOD, nothing matters; If there IS a GOD, EVERYTHING matters."

Sorry, don't know who to give credit to, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

First what do you mean Religion, in the sence what the westorners think religion we can not find in India. Because Religion has some properties like ONE GOD, Church like institution, Priest class, etc. but my opinion is very basic that have indians or Hindoos religion, for instance we can't find any perticular priest class, or one God concept, so we have tradition not religion. westerners saw religion in India by their religious back ground or with the frame work of their culture, they didn't think world can live without religion. so your question is considerable when we have Religion, but my answer is first you about what religion is? then find it exists or not, then you can get your answer yourself. if you need more you can contact at santhu_appu@yahoo.com or mobile no 919449696517

convinced. notwithstanding, the mechanism in which it holds our progression decrease back isn't by struggling with organic and organic evolution, which may be particularly slow after all. particularly, that's through struggling with rational idea and psychological progression in psychological fields. It also has a tendency to reason unnecessary and wasteful destruction of aspects, by such activities as religious wars.

Yes it is in some respects....The Book of Judas ....It mentions Noustics . ( No Not Agnostics ).This is what I believe in... Knowing yourself that their is a God and Living day by day as such ..There is no Church because churches are a social seen more than a religious thing... If YOU want to gather and talk about God then do so, but only because you want to at that point ...don't make it "SUNDAY" then you feel pressured to go ...
